Pool staff on tour of facility in June 2022

Pool staff were taken on a tour of the facility recently to see their new space. We're excited to jump in!

As part of the 2018-28 Long Term Plan, Council identified the need to replace the current TSB Pool Complex facility with a new building, providing significant improvements and increased levels of service in a more comfortable indoor swimming pool experience.

The benefits of this development include:

  • Future requirements – a facility that better meets the future needs of the community
  • Regional benefits – a facility that better caters for the needs of the Stratford district and its neighbours
  • More choice – a facility that delivers a better and wider ranges of services
  • Growth - a facility that stimulates community growth and development
  • Destination – a facility that makes Stratford more attractive as a place to either live, work or play.

How’s it being funded?
The project needed to attract some grant funding in order to go ahead, and in 2020 Council was successful in receiving a Provincial Growth Fund grant of $8million towards the project. The total cost of the project is $20million, with the remaining $12million being funded through rates and other external funding.

What’s happened so far?

2018
The project was approved as part of the Long Term Plan 2018-28
2020
August - Council sought feedback from the community on the pool development location and approved the location to be the corner of Portia Street and Regan Street (on the King Edward Park Reserve)
September – Contractors appointed
December - Designs signed off
2021
February - Site blessed and construction started
2022
Construction progressing well, with most of the action happening inside the walls of the facility. Check out the latest photos below.

September: We're gearing up for the move with the TSB Pool Complex closing doors on 2 October 2022. Read the full update here. We're aiming to have the new facility open before the end of the October school holidays.

FAQs

Have the entry fees changed?

There are some changes to pool fees and charges, these were set in July 2022 a spart of the Annual Plan 2022/23.You can view these changes here.

Why do you have to close the TSB Pool Complex at the beginning of the school holidays, that means my kids can’t swim in the holidays?

Closing the first weekend of the holidays means we can complete our school term swimming programmes and other group bookings, then use the school holidays to get our new facility up and running for the new term. We need time for staff to train and become familiar with the new environment prior to opening, and using the school holidays provides as little disruption to our users as possible. We appreciate your patience and understanding and can’t wait to see you at Wai o Rua – Stratford Aquatic Centre later in October.

What is happening to the old facility?

The future of the TSB Pool Complex building will be discussed with the community in 2023.

How do you book a lane for the new pool?

You’ll be able to book lanes online, keep an eye on our website for more information on how this works. We’ll share this link once it’s live.

Will dry land group fitness classes (or other types of classes) be available in the new pool?

We’re working towards broadening what fitness programmes are available within the new facility and we’ll update the community when these are confirmed. Keep an eye on our website or follow us on Facebook for the latest.

What kind of memberships can I have at the new pool?

Information about what memberships are available is on our website here. People will be able to buy memberships online once the pool is open. We’ll share this link once it’s live.

What will the opening hours be at the new facility?

Opening hours at Wai o Rua – Stratford Aquatic Centre will be 6am to 6.30pm week days, 7am to 5pm Saturday and 10am to 5pm Sunday and Public Holidays.
