Overview
Formal citizenship ceremonies are hosted by the Stratford District Council on behalf of the Department of Internal Affairs to welcome new citizens to New Zealand and confirm their citizenship.
Candidates are required to attend a ceremony to declare publicly their commitment to New Zealand and recite an oath or affirmation of allegiance before becoming a New Zealand citizen.
The Department of Internal Affairs will notify you of when your ceremony will take place - in Stratford, these are typically held 3-4 times per year.
The ceremony is held in the formal Council chambers and is attended by the District Mayor and elected members. The ceremony is followed by a light afternoon tea.
