Waste Management and Minimisation Plans
The purpose of the WMMP is to identify the district vision, objectives and targets for waste management and minimisation. It gives us a foundation for our work to lower emissions and the amount of waste going to landfill, and to promote a circular economy where materials are used and re-used for as long as possible. The WMMP also outlines how Council will fund and deliver actions to meet these objectives.
We’re required to review the plan every 6 years. In 2023, alongside our neighbouring districts and in line with the region's vision to achieve a zero-waste future, we consulted with our community about their waste management aspirations, concerns, and ideas to help our district achieve a sustainable future.
We used the information gathered to help inform our Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2023, which was adopted by Council in November 2023 and became operational on 1 December 2023, succeeding the 2018 WMMP.
There are big changes happening nationally within the waste management and minimisation environment to help our country move towards a more sustainable future. These changes are reflected in our new WMMP and impact some areas of our community more than others. In particular, our rural community, commercial properties and businesses, the construction industry, automotive industry, and any organisations that produce hazardous waste will be affected.
All our residents have a role to play in reducing the waste we produce, so even if you’re not a business owner or farmer, there’s a lot to be gained by familiarising yourself with our WMMP. Check out the actions section to see how we can work together to reduce waste in our community.

Taranaki Waste Assessment
The Taranaki Waste Assessment 2023 was prepared collaboratively by all three councils in Taranaki and takes a longer term view than the six year life of individual WMMPs.
The Waste Assessment contains three parts:
- Where we are now?
- Where do we want to be?
- How are we going to get there?
