Every year in the lead up to Te Matatini, the 'Ride for Talei' takes place to raise awareness about cervical and prostate cancer, carrying the legacy of women’s health campaigner Talei Morrison with them.
Talei discovered too late that she had cervical cancer, and dedicated the time she had left raising awareness for wāhine to get themselves tested by setting up the Smear Your Mea Trust and launching the viral #SmearYourMea campaign.
Around 175 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cervical cancer – and 50 people die from it – each year. Yet cervical cancer is preventable. By getting tested regularly, changes in the cervical cells that can lead to cancer can be detected and treated.
The 20-strong team of riders leave Auckland on Tuesday 18 February and arrive in Taranaki on Thursday 20 February – they are then riding around the Taranaki maunga stopping at a series of hauora events where whānau can find out more information about cervical and prostate cancer and access free testing!
