Drop in water restriction levels to Level 1 ‘Odds and Evens’
Recently, you warned Level 3 water restrictions may be on the way. With the dropping of restriction levels, could we still move to Level 3 this autumn?
Water restrictions are based on low river flow levels, due to natural environmental factors like hot, dry weather, triggering conditions in our resource consent. While Taranaki is still in a period of drought, and weather forecasts point to further dry weather, we're relieved that recent rain means we can lower water restriction levels instead of raising them.
We're optimistic that we'll now be able to avoid a move to Level 3 restrictions, but still encourage residents and businesses to think about what a move to Level 3 (essential water use only) would look like for them, and to continue their overall efforts to conserve water.
Why do water restrictions happen?
Water restrictions occur when river levels drop and that’s influenced by natural environmental factors, like the weather. Under our resource consent, when Pātea River levels drop below a certain point, we need to reduce the amount we take for the town supply to protect the health of the river, and because of that we move to restrict people’s use of water.
