The location of the new Children’s Bike Park in Stratford was blessed last week by matua Herewini Nopera of Whakaahurangi Marae in a ceremony supported by Council staff, elected members and local pre-schools. Construction work now getting underway and is due to be completed by April 2021.
District Mayor Neil Volzke says it’s exciting to see some action take place on the site.
“It’s a Long Term Plan 2018-28 project that needed external funding to realise the full potential of the idea, so we’re extremely pleased to be able to make this happen with no cost to ratepayers through the help of central government funding.”
“This was a real community driven vision and I know residents will enjoy watching it come to life over the next six months,” he says.
The initial idea was put forward by local pre-school Gr8kidz six years ago. Teachers and children at the time wrote a letter to Council with suggestions for a bike park and they even built a model of a potential bike park design. The concept was then consulted on throughout the 2018-2028 Long Term Plan, and it received a lot of positive support from the community.
The bike park has been designed to encourage children to get out and ride and to educate them in the safety aspects of cycling. The pump track, half basketball court and BBQ pavilion add extra value to the space, providing a real community hub for families with children of all ages to enjoy.
Local contractors Inframax have been awarded the main construction contract, with other local sub-contractors also being called on throughout the build process.
The pump track portion of the park is being developed by a Rotorua based company Southstar Trails who specialise in the production of community bike pump tracks. Their work can be seen around the country in a number of towns including Napier, Foxton Beach, Mt Maunganui and Grey Lynn in Auckland.
