Stratford District Council is currently reviewing the way its District Plan deals with indegenous forest and biodiversity.
Those parts of the District Plan to do with indigenous forest and the protection of wetlands are difficult to monitor. The District Plan also does not cover the assessment of the significance of indigenous forest to the level that is required under the Resource Management Act.
Therefore the Stratford District Council has released a discussion document which asks a number of questions about how our remaining forest is used and suggests possible answers to the monitoring and assessment problems.
The main difficulty is in balancing the need to protect significant forest and wild life with the need for landowners to be able to profitably manage their land. It is important that landowners have their say in the review to make sure that the approach taken works for them.
The discussion document is now available for comment and public consultation.
It is available from the Stratford District Council, Miranda Street, Stratford or can be found on our website here.
Submissions will be accepted up until 4.00 pm 28 May 2010.
All feedback will then be used in a formal proposal to change the relevant provisions of the Stratford District Plan. There will be public meetings in the eastern parts of the District in June and July of this year.
