Stratford District Council has long collaborated with the RSA to co-ordinate the district’s ANZAC Day events, however given the possible liquidation of the RSA, Council will now take full responsibility for the commemorations.
For those who wish to show their respect for ANZAC Day, commemorations in Stratford include wreath making, a dawn service, parade, civic service and wreath laying. These are all detailed below.
Wreath Making - Monday 24 April 2017
In preparation for ANZAC Day, a long held tradition of the Stratford community brings residents together to create wreaths which are then laid in the Hall of Remembrance on Broadway.
Council invites anyone interested in making wreaths for the Hall of Remembrance to the War Memorial Centre on Monday 24 April from 9.30am – 1.00pm. While some flowers have been ordered for the occasion, donations of more would be most appreciated. Morning tea will be provided for participants.
Those who prefer to drop off pre-made wreaths can do so between 1.00pm and 2.00pm directly to the Hall of Remembrance on Monday 24 April.
Dawn Service - Tuesday 25 April 2017
The Dawn Service will be held at the Cross of Sacrifice outside the War Memorial Centre, Miranda Street at 5.55am.
Returned servicemen and women, service members and members of the public are invited to attend. Coffee and toast will be served in the War Memorial Centre following the service.
Parade - Tuesday 25 April 2017
The parade commences at 10.30am. It will start from the RSA building on Miranda Street, marching to the southern roundabout. It will then proceed along Broadway to the northern roundabout, turning onto Regan Street and Miranda Street to end at the War Memorial car park for the start of the civic service. All organisations, groups and public wishing to take part should assemble at the RSA, Fenton Street at 10.20am.
All descendants of returned service personnel are welcome to participate in the parade. Returned service personnel are asked to wear their medals and decorations. Descendants of returned service personnel marching in the parades are asked to wear medals on the right upper portion of their apparel.
Civic Service & Wreath Laying - Tuesday 25 April 2017
Following the parade a civic service will be held at the War Memorial Centre at 11.00am. The wreath laying ceremony will be held at the Cross of Sacrifice following the civic service. A cup of tea will follow the wreath laying.
Hall of Remembrance
The Hall of Remembrance will be open on ANZAC Day between 6.00am and 3.00pm.
