The Hall of Remembrance is the only War Memorial in New Zealand in the form of a hall.
The Hall of Remembrance is lined with photographs commemorating soldiers from the District who gave their lives in the two World Wars.
Each ANZAC Day (April 25), up to 130 wreaths are placed here in memory of their sacrifice.
This was originally the site of the Town Hall, built in 1884 but destroyed by a large bush fire two years later. Fire again struck this site when the first Municipal Buildings were razed in 1914, following which this structure went up in 1916.
The Hall of Remembrance is located on Broadway, on the western side of the CBD.
Opening hours: 9am - 5pm weekdays.
