WHAT ARE COMMUNITY OUTCOMES?
In 2003 Taranaki's four councils commissioned research to identify issues that Taranaki people saw as important for their future.
These included things like health, education, crime, culture, the environment, our infrastructure and the economy.
The process for deciding on the Community Outcomes involved public meetings, hui and stakeholder meetings, focus groups, a comprehensive telephone survey and a questionnaire to every mailing address in our region.
Although said in many different ways – the same messages were repeated by different groups and individuals. Those messages were collected into 38 key statements, grouped under seven themes.
These themes belong to the people of Taranaki:
- Secure & Healthy Taranaki
- Prosperous Taranaki
- Skilled Taranaki
- Connected Taranaki
- Sustainable Taranaki
- Together Taranaki
- Vibrant Taranaki

STRATFORD'S COMMUNITY PRIORITIES
The information collected was then narrowed down to those priorities Stratford people felt were most important:
- A district with a clear identity where people experience a sense of belonging and pride.
- The leading rural trading centre attractive to residents, business and visitors alike.
- High quality health and education facilities and services accessible to all.
- Affordable high quality core services and facilities.
- Local jobs and training for local people.
- Sustainable development.
- Comprehensive social, recreational and cultural facilities accessible to all.
- Clean air, water and land.
- A built environment that is attractive, safe and healthy.
- A diverse natural environment that is accessible to all.
WHAT ARE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS?
Once the community outcomes were established, a group was formed consisting of key regional stakeholders who could help contribute to these outcomes. This group meets regularly and works towards ensuring that there is a focused effort on achieving the community’s outcomes for Taranaki.
HOW DO WE KNOW IF WE ARE SUCCEEDING?
The stakeholders worked together and commissioned the production of a regional indicators report which measures where Taranaki is in relation to community outcomes. The report also looks at where our community sits in relation to the rest on New Zealand and is updated annually.
