1890 - The Stratford County Council is formed
1898 - The Stratford Borough Council is formed

The Stratford District Council was first formed on 1 April 1989 from a merger between the former Stratford Borough Council and former Stratford County Council and reconstituted on 1 November 1989 as part of the nation-wide "revolution" in local government.
The Stratford District Council is one of three in the Taranaki region, the other two being the New Plymouth District Council and the South Taranaki District Council.
To the north the Taranaki region is bounded by the Waikato region and the Manawatu-Wanganui region on its eastern and southern boundaries. The eastern portion of the Stratford District lies in the Manawatu-Wanganui region.
The Stratford District represents about one quarter of the Taranaki Region. A further quarter of the District comprises of the Egmont Ring Plain which is predominantly dairying and the balance being rolling hill country, supporting dry stock farming and bush.
The predominantly rural District is supported by its service town of Stratford which has a population of over 5,000 as well as numerous community and industrial enterprises.
Stratford District is the gateway to two National Parks - the Egmont National Park with its spectacular mountain and the Whanganui National Park with its vast areas of virgin rain forest and walkways.
The energy and tourism activities are both of growing significance to the Stratford District.
